Briefly
One of the most dramatic viewpoints on the eastern tip of Madeira, located on the São Lourenço peninsula. It offers a raw, bird’s-eye view of both the north and south coasts simultaneously, showcasing vibrant orange and red volcanic rock formations. It is widely considered the best spot on the island to watch the sunrise.

How to Get There
Drive towards Caniçal and follow the signs for Ponta de São Lourenço. At the last roundabout before the main PR8 hiking parking lot, turn left towards “Ponta do Rosto.” The road leads directly to the observation area.

Important to Know
- Sunrise: This is the #1 spot for photographers to catch the first light hitting the island’s cliffs.
- Wind: It is extremely exposed; strong gusts are very common, so hold onto your belongings.
- Geology: You can clearly see the distinct layers of volcanic ash and basalt that formed the peninsula millions of years ago.
- Porto Santo: On very clear days, you can see the neighboring island of Porto Santo on the horizon.
