The largest public beach on the Island of Madeira, stretching for about 2 kilometers. Formosa Beach is a unique combination of large volcanic pebbles and stretches of natural black sand. It is the main coastal escape for Funchal residents, offering a raw and expansive Atlantic landscape.

How to Get There
Located at the far western end of Funchal. You can drive down to the parking areas or walk from the Lido via the “Passeio Público Marítimo” promenade.

Important to Know
- Terrain: Wear water shoes; the transition from large stones to sand can be tricky for bare feet.
- Tunnel: There is a tunnel at the eastern end of the beach that connects it to the Lido promenade.
- Sunset: This is one of the best spots in Funchal to watch the sunset over the massive Cabo Girão cliff in the distance.
