PR 21 — Caminho do Norte
Briefly
A historical mountain trail that links the Encumeada pass to the Ribeira Brava valley. This route follows an old road once used to transport goods between the north and south coasts. It winds along the mountain slopes, offering views of the massive central peaks and the agricultural landscapes of the southern valleys.

How to Get There
The trail starts at the Boca da Encumeada viewpoint, right at the junction of the roads connecting the north and south.
Important: This is a linear trail. If you park at the top, arrange a taxi from the bottom or hike back up (much harder).

- Geography: This path gives you a clear sense of the island’s “backbone” and the transition from the wet north to the dryer south.

- Views: Incredible perspectives of the Serra de Água valley.
