: Open Boca da Encumeada on Google Maps
The trail ends at the Encumeada viewpoint (Miradouro da Encumeada).
Important: This is a linear trail and very long. Unless you plan to hike 22km (there and back), you must arrange a transfer or taxi to pick you up at Boca da Encumeada.
What you need to bring:
Pro hiking boots (uneven, rocky terrain)
Trekking poles (essential for saving your knees)
Flashlight (there are small tunnels/overhangs)
At least 2 liters of water (no springs on the ridge)
Warm layers and a windbreaker
Important to know:
Physical Demand: This trail is physically taxing. It follows the “spine” of the island with constant ups and downs on stone steps.
Vertigo: There are narrow sections with steep drops on both sides. Not recommended for those afraid of heights.
Caves: You will pass “Furnas do Abrigo” — old volcanic caves once used as shelters by shepherds.
Weather: The ridge is often the meeting point of clouds from the North and South. Visibility can drop to zero in minutes.
