PR 19 — Caminho Real do Paul do Mar
Briefly
A spectacular and steep descent that follows one of the island’s historical “Royal Paths.” It zig-zags down the massive southern cliffs, connecting the village of Prazeres to the fishing village of Paul do Mar. The trail offers breathtaking bird’s-eye views of the Atlantic coast and the traditional stone-walled terraces.

How to Get There
The trail begins in the village of Prazeres, near the Hotel Jardim Atlântico. Look for the sign “PR 19” leading towards the cliff edge.

Important: This is a very steep descent on old stone pavement. Arrange a pick-up in Paul do Mar or take a taxi back up to Prazeres.
What to Bring
- Trekking boots with excellent grip (stones can be slippery even when dry)
- Trekking poles (highly recommended to save your knees)
- Plenty of water (the cliff reflects the heat)
- Sunscreen and hat

- History: This path was once the only land connection for the people of Paul do Mar to reach the rest of the island.
