PR 7 — Levada do Moinho
Briefly
A beautiful circular route in the sunny valley of Ponta do Sol. It combines the lower Levada do Moinho and the upper Levada Nova. The trail takes you through agricultural terraces and deep into the canyon to see the sources of the water. The absolute highlight is walking behind a spectacular waterfall carved into the cliffside.

How to Get There
Drive to the village of Ponta do Sol and follow signs to Lombada. Park near the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The trail starts on the steps behind the church.

Important: Most people start on the lower level (Moinho) and return on the upper level (Nova).
What to Bring
- Flashlight (Mandatory for the tunnel on Levada Nova)
- Hiking boots (can be slippery near the waterfall)
- Water and snacks
- Raincoat
Key Points
- The Waterfall: On the Levada Nova section, the trail is cut into the rock and passes behind a waterfall. It’s one of the most photogenic spots on the island.
- The Tunnel: There is one 200-meter tunnel on the upper section. It is narrow but has a flat floor.
- Vertigo: Some sections of the lower levada do not have railings. Focus on your footing.
- Agriculture: You will see many “poios” (terraced fields) where locals grow bananas and sugar cane.
