PR 1.2 — Vereda do Pico Ruivo
Briefly
The easiest and shortest way to reach the highest point of Madeira (1862m). It is the best alternative to the long PR1 trek, offering the same breathtaking summit views with much less effort. The path is paved with stones and is accessible to most hikers with basic fitness.

: How to find
The trail starts at the end of the road in Achada do Teixeira, above the town of Santana.

From Funchal, it is a 60-minute drive via the north coast (Santana).
Important: There is no public transport (bus) to the trailhead. You will need a rental car, a taxi, or a mountain transfer service.
What you need to bring:
Comfortable hiking shoes
Windbreaker/Jacket (it is very windy at the top)
Sunscreen (no shade on the trail)
Water
Important to know:
Weather: Even if it’s sunny on the coast, it can be foggy or rainy at the peak. Check the webcam before going.
Shelter: There is a “Casa de Abrigo” near the summit where you can find a toilet and sometimes buy snacks, but don’t count on it for a full meal.
Geology: Look for the “Homem em pé” (Standing Man) — a famous basalt rock formation near the parking lot.
The Summit: The final 0.5 km to the top is the steepest part. There are three 360° observation decks at the summit.
