Tourist Ordered to Leave Madeira Within Five Days After Funchal Robbery

A man detained by the Public Security Police (PSP) over a violent robbery on Avenida Sá Carneiro in Funchal has been ordered by the court to leave the Autonomous Region of Madeira within five days. Following his first judicial hearing, he was also placed under several coercive measures, including daily reporting to the PSP and a ban on being in or moving through public roads between 17:00 and 08:00. The case began on the morning of the 25th of May, when police received a complaint about the theft of a mobile phone from a 25-year-old Swiss tourist who was allegedly assaulted during the robbery. Officers from the Funchal Police Station and the Criminal Investigation Squad quickly launched inquiries, and a witness played a key role by providing footage that helped identify the suspect. Police later located him at a hotel in Funchal and arrested him under a warrant issued by the PSP after confirming his identity and reviewing evidence from Funchal’s public CCTV surveillance system. The investigation was also connected to a separate Maritime Police report about disturbances on the Lobo Marinho during its return journey from Porto Santo, where the suspect allegedly fought with another passenger and tried to throw him overboard. At the time of his arrest, he was also said to be harassing three guests at the hotel, leaving them distressed even though they chose not to file a formal complaint. Authorities have withheld the man’s nationality, while social media users have questioned why he was not placed in prison or immediately deported.
