PR 6.6 — Vereda do Túnel do Cavalo
Briefly
A unique trail that connects the north and south sides of the island through a long historical tunnel. Starting from the Rabaçal forest house, it passes through the “Horse Tunnel” and descends toward the Calheta region. It’s a fascinating route that showcases how the island’s water system crosses the central mountain spine.

How to Get There
The trail begins at the Casa do Rabaçal (forest house). Follow the signs pointing towards the tunnel.

Important: You must walk through an 800-meter long tunnel. A powerful flashlight is mandatory.

- Flashlight or headlamp (MUST HAVE)
- Waterproof jacket (tunnels are often dripping)

Key Points
- The Tunnel: It is approximately 800 meters long. The floor can be wet and uneven. Watch your head!
- Climate Change: You might enter the tunnel in fog on the north side and exit into bright sun on the south side.
- Linear Trail: Most hikers walk through the tunnel and then return the same way.
