Tourists and residents gathered with anticipation for the reopening of Recommended Route 1 (PR1), the trail that links Pico do Areeiro with Pico Ruivo across Madeira’s central massif. After recovery and renovation work in several areas, the route is once again open along its full length. The reopening restores access to one of the island’s most iconic walking paths for both visitors and locals. For the moment, entry is controlled through mandatory reservation on the Simplifica Portal. Registration must be completed for Vereda do Areeiro, including the PR1, PR1.1, and PR1.2 routes. The measure is intended to manage visitor numbers and improve safety along the trail. Eduardo Jesus, the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, said the route can still be walked in both directions between Pico do Areeiro and the Pedra Rija viewpoint, while the section from there to Pico Ruivo is now one-way only.
