PR1 Fully Reopens to Walkers on 1st of May

The Recommended Route 1 (PR1), which links Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, will reopen to the public in full on Friday, the 1st of May. The trail was affected by a landslide during the August 2024 fires, and part of it had only reopened last week for the MIUT before closing again so work could continue. According to the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, the route is considered the most emblematic of Madeira. It will be open in both directions between Pico do Areeiro and the Pedra Rija viewpoint, after which access will be unidirectional from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. Manuel Filipe, President of the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, said it is now possible to reserve a space on the portal. Walkers leaving Pico Ruivo can use Vereda da Ilha (PR1.1), Vereda do Pico Ruivo (Achada do Teixeira), and, in the future, PR1.3, Vereda da Encumeada. Miguel Albuquerque, President of the Regional Government, was present today while workers were still on site carrying essential materials on their backs.
