The São José Fort Viewpoint is located in an 18th-century fortress and offers a unique point of view over the elegant port of Funchal. It is the smallest and most seaward of Funchal’s forts, providing a “water-level” perspective of the cruise ships and the coastal promenade.

How to Get There
Located on the pier (Pontinha) in Funchal’s harbour, right next to the cruise ship terminal. It is a short walk from the CR7 Museum.

- History: Known as the “Principality of Pontinha,” the fort has a curious history of claiming independence from Portugal.
- Ship Spotting: This is the absolute best spot to see massive cruise liners up close as they dock.
- Coastal Protection: You can see the historic cannons that once protected the bay from invaders.
