Santana Rainfall Hits Red Warning Thresholds

Rain in Santana reached red warning levels until 4 pm this afternoon, after the local weather station recorded 64.3 mm per square metre in six hours between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. That was the highest reading in the network of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and meets the criterion for extreme precipitation above 60 mm in 6 hours. The station also measured 17.8 mm in one hour, a value that falls within yellow warning limits. Over the last 24 hours, since 16:00 yesterday, Santana has accumulated more than 120 mm of rain, making it the municipality most affected in the archipelago. Porto Santo followed with more than 70 mm in the same period, while Caniçal exceeded 50 mm. Other stations, especially on the northern slope of the island of Madeira, in mountainous areas, and in Porto Santo, also reached yellow warning levels, including Chão do Areeiro, Porto Santo/Airport, Caniçal, Ponta de São Jorge, São Vicente, and Santa Cruz/Aeroporto. The heavy rain has also led to 15 flight cancellations and 8 diversions, and there are reports that the Porto Santo Airport Terminal building has been affected by the bad weather.
