Briefly

One of the most scenic coastal viewpoints in Santana, offering a spectacular look at the Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve. From here, you can see high vertical cliffs, hidden waterfalls crashing into the ocean, and a small traditional farm area (fajã) at the base. It is a peaceful spot that perfectly captures the wild spirit of the north coast.

Drive to the center of Santana and follow the signs for “Rocha do Navio.” The road leads directly to a dead end where the viewpoint and the cable car station are located.

Important to Know

  • The Cable Car: There is a Teleférico that takes you down to the nature reserve. It was originally built to help local farmers transport their crops.
  • Nature Reserve: The area below is a protected marine reserve. Fishing is strictly regulated to preserve the biodiversity of the waters.
  • The Name: “Ship’s Rock” comes from the 19th-century shipwreck of a Dutch vessel that occurred right beneath these cliffs.
  • Waterfalls: Look closely at the cliffs to the west — you can often see several thin waterfalls dropping directly into the Atlantic.
