Authorities at Praia Formosa have begun enforcing fines after repeated disregard for safety warnings and barriers during rough weather. The beach and its promenade, which are popular with locals, commuters, and tourists, are often closed when conditions become dangerous, yet many people still enter restricted areas. Marília Andrade, Administradora Frente Mar Funchal, told RTP Madeira that more visitors disobey than obey the warnings, even when barriers and signs are in place. When the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issues rough sea alerts, officials inspect the conditions and take preventive measures to avoid accidents. New signs will be installed under Decree-Law 159/2012, which allows penalties for crossing barriers, entering forbidden zones, or ignoring lifeguard instructions. The Polícia Marítima will issue the fines on site, with amounts ranging from €30 to €100 for individuals. If the offence is committed by a legal entity, the maximum penalty can reach €300. Marília Andrade said that awareness campaigns are no longer enough and that the law must now be applied because more and more people fail to comply.
