Praia Formosa Promenade to Shut for 16 Months as Rehabilitation Begins in August

Madeira’s Praia Formosa promenade is due to close from August for 16 months while a €1.8 million second-phase rehabilitation project gets underway. The public tender for the works is open until 24 May, and the intervention covers the coastal stretch between Praia Formosa and Ribeira dos Socorridos in Madeira. This stage is the second of three planned phases and follows earlier repairs on the most severely damaged parts of the walkway. The new works will concentrate on sections with lower, though still important, levels of deterioration. Planned tasks include structural reinforcement of pillars, beams, slabs and platforms, along with repairs to pavements, retaining walls, access points and signage. The Sociedade Metropolitana de Desenvolvimento said the aim is to strengthen parts of the promenade affected over time by exposure to coastal conditions. Authorities expect the construction period to begin in August if the tender process moves ahead as scheduled, and closures will shift along the route rather than affecting the whole promenade at once. The promenade, inaugurated in 2006, is heavily used by residents and tourists, and a third phase is already planned, although no date has been announced for its tender.
