PR 18 — Levada do Rei
Briefly
One of the most spectacular North-coast levadas, leading you to the “King’s source.” The trail is an immersive experience in the UNESCO Laurissilva forest, featuring exotic plants and towering trees. It culminates at the Ribeiro Bonito, a pristine mountain stream in a deep, lush canyon that feels like a natural sanctuary.

How to Get There
Drive to the village of São Jorge on the north coast. Follow signs for “Levada do Rei.” The trail starts at the end of the road near the water plant.

Important: There is a section where you have to walk under a small waterfall (water curtain) that falls directly onto the path. You will get wet!

- Ribeiro Bonito: The end of the trail is a hidden, silent paradise. Take 10 minutes to just sit and listen to the water.
- The Path: The first half is open with views of the São Jorge valley; the second half is deep, dark forest.
- Safety: The path is well-maintained, but some sections near the end can be slippery.
