PR 14 — Levada dos Cedros
Briefly
A serene and primitive levada walk that descends from the Fanal plateau into the lush valley of Ribeira da Janela. The trail follows one of the oldest water channels on the island, surrounded by a dense forest of ancient Cedars and giant ferns. It’s a perfect route for those who want to experience the humid, green heart of the UNESCO Laurissilva.

How to Get There
The trail starts at the Posto Florestal do Fanal on the ER 209 road. Look for the stairs descending from the plateau into the forest.
Important: This trail involves many stone steps, especially at the beginning and end. It can be tough on the knees during the descent.
What to Bring
- Sturdy hiking boots (path is often muddy and slippery)
- Raincoat (this area is very humid and misty)
- Water and snacks
- Trekking poles (recommended for the steps)
