New 5.1 Tremor Deepens Panic in Caracas

Residents in Caracas, including Madeiran emigrants, reported a new earthquake to DIÁRIO this lunchtime in the Venezuelan capital. Preliminary data from seismic monitoring applications shared with DIÁRIO by residents placed the quake at magnitude 5.1 and “near the coast of Venezuela,” in the state of Aragua. The record is linked to the Colombian Geological Survey and is currently marked as a manual evaluation. A second image sent to DIÁRIO showed another seismic event recorded this morning in Venezuela, with a magnitude of 4.2 and an epicentre about 10 kilometres east of La Guaira, in the municipality of Vargas. The 5.1 quake appeared almost at the same time, adding to the sense that a new sequence of tremors is affecting the north-central region of the country. Panic spread through several areas of Caracas, with residents evacuating buildings as a precaution and families staying in the streets out of fear of aftershocks. Venezuelan authorities have not yet confirmed the exact depth of the earthquakes, and there are still no reports of material damage or casualties from these latest tremors.
