Madeiran Woman Amputated After Venezuela Earthquake Rescue

A Madeiran woman has lost her right arm after being pulled alive from the ruins of a collapsed apartment building in Venezuela. According to Correio da Manhã, Ermínia Pinto was trapped for almost 24 hours beneath the rubble in Catia La Mar, La Guaira, after the powerful earthquakes that struck the country on Wednesday. She suffered severe crush injuries when the building came down and is now recovering in hospital. Ms Pinto is the director of the Luso-Venezuelan Centre Folklore Group of La Guaira. Her son, Juan Pinto, has started an online fundraising campaign to help pay for her medical care. In his appeal, he said the rescue after nearly a day under the debris was “very difficult” to witness. He added that the money will go toward medicines, consultations, medical examinations, and her continued treatment.
