The Electricity Company of Madeira (EEM) started a major logistical operation in Porto Santo this afternoon to unload and move the parts for the island’s new wind farm. Because the equipment is large and heavy, the work is expected to affect road traffic for about 15 days, especially along Porto Santo’s waterfront. EEM has put traffic management and safety measures in place along the transport route to reduce disruption and protect the public. The company also asked residents and visitors for understanding and cooperation, and urged drivers and pedestrians to respect all signage and instructions from teams on the ground. The operation highlights the scale and technology behind what is described as a strategic investment in Porto Santo’s energy future. Fully financed through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the new Porto Santo Wind Farm will include two wind turbines with a generating capacity of 3.8 MW each, for a total installed capacity of 7.6 MW. Combined with the island’s existing 20 MW battery storage system, a 2 MW solar photovoltaic plant, and the new wind farm, Porto Santo’s renewable energy capacity will rise to 14 MW. This mix of wind, solar, and storage is expected to allow the island to be powered entirely by renewable energy sources during certain periods of the year, while renewable energy should account for 60 to 70 per cent of annual electricity production once the project is completed.
