The CDS has submitted a proposal for a resolution in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira to inventory and requalify vacant public properties, with special attention on deactivated schools in more isolated areas of the Region. The initiative, titled ‘Inventory and Use of Vacant Public Properties in the Autonomous Region of Madeira’, will be debated tomorrow, the 6th of May. During a visit to the old school of Lombo de São João, in the municipality of Ponta do Sol, which was deactivated two years ago, deputy Sara Madalena pointed to the building’s advanced state of degradation. She said that unused properties naturally deteriorate without maintenance and argued that this situation must be reversed by giving them a new purpose. The proposal says many abandoned schools could be transformed into community centres and adapted for social uses such as day centres, nursing homes, intergenerational spaces, associative centres, leisure activities and sports. Sara Madalena added that reactivating these spaces would strengthen social cohesion and help integrate new populations, especially as Madeiran communities become more diverse. The CDS-PP says the measure would both increase the value of vacant public assets and address social needs in areas far from large urban centres, while supporting sustainable development and better quality of life in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
