The PTP has asked Miguel Albuquerque’s executive whether it intends to make golf a compulsory subject in the Region’s school curriculum. Raquel Coelho said the question arises because the Government plans to build five golf courses with public money. She argued that the growing number of golf courses in the Region could end up being used mainly by schoolchildren for practice, describing them as “white elephants.” The labour leader said the party does not understand the Government’s fixation with golf course construction, especially since the current facilities already cost the public purse heavily and fail to deliver the expected economic return. The party also called the use of public funds in this sector absurd. It said this is particularly troubling at a time when the population is dealing with a severe housing crisis. The PTP added that people are also facing an astronomical rise in the cost of living.
