Pingo Doce donated around 536 tonnes of food to institutions in Funchal last year through its ‘Alimenta o Bairro’ programme. The company said the initiative collected the equivalent of 12 thousand tonnes of foodstuffs nationwide in 2025. It added that helping to address food shortages is a priority and that it works regularly with social solidarity institutions in communities near its stores across the country. In 2025, donations reached more than 550 institutions and included surplus food that could no longer be sold because it was close to its shelf life or had damaged packaging, while still meeting food safety standards. Filipa Pimentel, Director of Sustainable Development and Local Impact at Pingo Doce, said the company is proud to be increasingly present in local communities and to help ease the difficulties faced by many families. Launched in 2024, ‘Alimenta o Bairro’ expanded Pingo Doce’s donation model by involving store teams more directly and improving the response to partner institutions’ needs. The programme was also updated in 2025 through more eligible donation items, more frequent in-store donations, and training for institutions and employees, while a dedicated website was created for institutions to learn about the programme and request support.
