Meningococcal Meningitis Case Reported at Santana Elementary School

A case of meningococcal meningitis was reported at Santana Elementary School, according to Antena 1 Madeira and confirmed by East Zone health delegate João Vieira Martins on public radio. The patient is a secondary school student who was diagnosed last week and has been receiving treatment since Thursday. The student’s family has also started preventive medication. The health authority is monitoring the situation and carried out a risk assessment involving the student’s close contacts, the doctor told Antena 1 Madeira. João Vieira Martins said he expects no further cases within the school community. He also noted that the infection may be linked to a possible drop in immunity, although the young man is considered healthy. The risk assessment has already been completed, and the measures considered appropriate have been put in place, he added. JM has contacted the Regional Secretariat for Health and Civil Protection for more information.
