Madeira to Roll Out Mobile Bus Tickets and Passes in 2026

Madeira will introduce a new digital public transport system in 2026 that lets passengers buy and use bus tickets on their phones. The announcement was made today on April 30, 2026, by the regional secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, Pedro Rodrigues, after a test journey on bus line 45 between Nazaré and central Funchal. The platform is still being tested and is expected to be ready before the summer, becoming the main sales channel for single tickets and travel passes. It will let residents and visitors purchase tickets in advance, including before arriving in Madeira, and store them on a smartphone as QR codes. The new “Giro” ticket will be rechargeable, valid for one year, and accepted by Horários do Funchal, Rodoeste and CAM across Madeira and Porto Santo. Officials also presented an upgraded passenger information system, with new monitors inside buses and electronic panels at stops, starting with 10 panels on the “Linha Verde” route and later expanding by 25 more in Funchal. Traditional sales will remain available for now through operator points, more than 100 Payshop stores, 18 ticket vending machines including one at Madeira Airport, and direct sales on buses, while the Giro app will eventually support all ticket types and later make travel passes fully digital.
