Madeira Sees 44% of 2025 Car Registrations Go to Electrified Vehicles

Madeira’s car market in 2025 moved further toward electric and hybrid models, with electrified vehicles making up 44% of all new registrations. A total of 3,796 light passenger cars were registered across the region during the year. Of those, 1,689 were gasoline cars, 1,012 were fully electric, 626 were hybrid, and 421 were diesel. Gasoline remained the largest single category, but electric models closed the gap considerably. Hybrid vehicles reached 44.4% of the market share for new vehicles sold in Madeira over the last year, while gasoline cars followed at 40% and diesel fell to 11% of total registrations. Interest in electric vehicles is still strong in 2026, with buyers and dealers citing environmental concerns, rising fuel prices, and a payback period of about 3–4 years. Across Portugal, 2025 also marked the first time electric cars sold more units than gasoline vehicles, although Madeira is advancing at a slower pace than the mainland.
