Madeira Population Rises for Seventh Straight Year

Madeira’s resident population increased for the seventh consecutive year in 2025, reaching 266,130 inhabitants, the highest level recorded in the last 14 years. The latest estimates from the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), based on data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), show an increase of 1,430 residents compared with 2024, when the population was 264,700. This total is close to the historical peak reached in 2010, when the region counted 267,965 inhabitants. The growth was mainly supported by a net migration of +2,557 people, which offset a worsening natural balance. That natural balance fell from -781 in 2024 to -1,127 in 2025, reflecting more deaths than births. The effective growth rate stood at 5.4 per thousand inhabitants, with migration growth at 9.6 per thousand and natural growth at -4.2 per thousand. Porto Santo, Porto Moniz and Machico posted the strongest relative increases, while Santana and Funchal were the only municipalities with negative effective growth rates.
