The Regional Authority for Economic Activities (ARAE) and the Judiciary Police (PJ) carried out a coordinated inspection operation this morning across Madeira. The action targeted shops selling cannabis-derived products and “smart shop” items, with 11 separate establishments under investigation. One of the main inspection points was the Cannabis Bio Store in Largo do Chafariz, Funchal, where authorities seized suspected psychotropic substances. PJ coordinator in Funchal, José Matos, said the operation also involved the PSP (Public Security Police) and the Regional Health Service. He added that searches and inspections were still taking place in several establishments. The PJ’s Madeira drug laboratory is now analysing the seized products to identify their chemical composition, legal status, and possible public health risks. Authorities have not yet provided details on arrests or charges because the proceedings are ongoing. The PJ is expected to release a fuller statement once the investigations are completed and the first laboratory results are reviewed.
