The Union Association of Police Professionals (ASPP/PSP) sent a letter to the Minister of Internal Affairs after a working visit to the Regional Command of the PSP of Madeira on the 25th and 26th of June. In that visit, the union identified several problems affecting police operations in the Autonomous Region. It said the shortage of manpower is one of the main difficulties, with direct consequences for operational capacity and the visibility of proximity policing. The ASPP/PSP also criticized the management of the National Unit of Foreigners and Borders (UNEF), arguing that the transfer of professionals to airport duties has weakened the generic local police forces of Madeira. The association further warned that frequent cancellation of rest days and periods to cover staffing gaps is causing significant wear and tear among officers. It also listed unresolved issues such as the revision of the insularity allowance, compliance with pre-retirement rules and improvements to police health conditions. The ASPP/PSP said it expects a reply from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and concrete action, while stressing that Central Power must take responsibility for internal security and for valuing the professionals who work in Madeira.
