The Socialist Group will present a motion tomorrow at the Funchal Municipal Assembly seeking recommendations to improve accessibility and travel conditions for people with reduced mobility in the municipality. In a statement sent to the press, the party said that Funchal still faces several ongoing barriers that restrict movement and daily access. Among the problems cited were architectural obstacles, too few adapted parking spaces, the unauthorised use of reserved bays, limited pedestrian access, weak accessible public transport, poorly equipped bus stops, and narrow pavements. To address these shortcomings, the PS has proposed more disability parking spaces, especially in the city centre and near key public services, healthcare facilities, and economic hubs. The initiative also suggests exempting holders of disability parking badges from parking meter fees or reducing those charges. The party said this would prevent travel time and personal or professional errands from becoming an obstacle or a form of discrimination for people with mobility issues. PS deputies also want a better public transport network for people with reduced mobility, including services running until midnight, and argued that a truly inclusive city must allow all citizens to use public spaces and participate fully in community life.
