Funchal Council Considers Free Parking for Disabled Drivers

On Thursday, independent councillor Luís Filipe Santos proposed at a Funchal City Council meeting that the municipality introduce free parking for people with disabilities. He said the measure would support social inclusion and make daily life easier for citizens with reduced mobility. The municipal executive has agreed to study and analyse the proposal, according to the councillor. Luís Filipe Santos welcomed that response but said the plan must be turned into practical action, describing it as a basic issue of social justice that should be treated as a priority. He also pointed to Article 10 of the Decree-Law No. 307/2003, of 10 December, which recognises specific parking rights for people with reduced mobility. Under the proposed municipal regime, disabled badge holders would be able to park for free in public parks managed by the municipality and in surface parking spaces that currently require payment.
