Funchal Socialist Group Calls for Better Mobility Access

The Socialist Group will present a motion tomorrow at the Funchal Municipal Assembly seeking a recommendation to improve accessibility and travel conditions for people with reduced mobility in the municipality. In a statement to the press, the party said that Funchal still faces several long-standing barriers that make movement difficult for residents and visitors with mobility issues. These include architectural obstacles, too few adapted parking spaces, the unauthorised use of reserved bays, limited pedestrian access, weak accessible public transport, poorly equipped bus stops, and narrow pavements. To address the problem, the proposal calls for more parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities, especially in the city centre and near key public services, healthcare facilities, and economic hubs. It also suggests exempting or reducing parking meter fees for holders of disability parking badges so that travel time and daily tasks do not become an obstacle or a form of discrimination. The PS deputies further want a stronger public transport network adapted to the needs of those with reduced mobility, including service running until midnight. PS Funchal said that a truly inclusive city must allow all citizens to use public spaces, take part in community life, and benefit from what the city offers.
