The New Right Party (PND) has denounced reports that Marmeleiros Hospital is placing beds in corridors for patients who cannot be discharged because there is no suitable social care provision. In a statement released today, the party said that, if confirmed, the situation shows the failure of the Regional Government and the Regional Secretary for Health, Micaela Fonseca de Freitas, to respond effectively to problems in the Regional Health Service. The PND said it is unacceptable for elderly people to remain in corridors without proper safety, privacy and dignity while they wait for social care support. Regional coordinator Paulo Azevedo said the corridors of Marmeleiros Hospital were never designed for this purpose and lack essential features such as power sockets, oxygen supply points and electric beds. He added that this arrangement exposes patients to constant movement and raises the risk of infection. The party also praised nurses, healthcare assistants and other health professionals, saying they continue to provide the best care possible despite difficult conditions. As an alternative, the PND proposed converting unused public buildings, including the former Tanque School and Santa Rita School, into care facilities for elderly patients with complex needs. Paulo Azevedo said elderly people and health professionals deserve respect, dignity and concrete solutions from those governing the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
