CHEGA Seeks AMT Hearing Over New Taxi Tariff Rules

The CHEGA parliamentary group has asked for a hearing with the Mobility and Transport Authority (AMT) at the Assembly of the Republic’s Committee on Infrastructure, Housing, and Mobility to seek clarification on new tariff rules for the taxi sector. Francisco Gomes, the Madeiran deputy who serves as CHEGA’s coordinator for the committee, said the proposed amendments could have serious consequences for thousands of professionals and small businesses. He warned that decisions made without proper assessment could threaten a sector that provides an essential service to all Portuguese people. CHEGA says it wants the technical, economic, and regulatory criteria behind the changes to be explained in detail. The party also wants to understand how the new rules could affect profitability and the long-term sustainability of operators. Francisco Gomes argued that any reform must protect consumers while also preserving the economic viability of taxi professionals. He added that the hearing should bring clarity to the purpose of the new tariffs and their impact on both operators and users.
