Francisco Gomes, a Chega deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, has obtained approval for a draft resolution from his party in the Committee on Infrastructure, Housing and Mobility. The proposal calls on the national government to establish a regular maritime connection for passengers and cargo between Madeira and the mainland. It was discussed and approved during this morning’s committee session. The text also urges the government to fulfil the commitments made to the people of Madeira and the obligations included in the State Budget on restoring the ferry service. Francisco Gomes said the ferry is a State responsibility tied to mobility, the economy, and territorial cohesion in the region. He added that the link has long been demanded by the Madeiran population and would help increase competition in transport, lower costs, and expand mobility options. Chega, according to Gomes, will keep pressing the issue until the connection is effectively resumed. The resolution now goes to a plenary vote, where he hopes it will receive backing from most political forces represented in the Assembly of the Republic.
