Strong Winds Trigger Dozens of Cancellations at Madeira Airport

Strong winds caused major disruption at Madeira Airport on Wednesday, leading to three dozen flight cancellations across both arrivals and departures. By 18:00, 15 inbound connections and 15 outbound connections had been cancelled, creating serious difficulties for passengers and airlines. The affected routes included services to and from Lisbon, Porto, Amsterdam, London (Gatwick and Luton), Zurich, Madrid, Munich, Paris-Orly, and Nantes. Flights were operated by TAP Air Portugal, easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways, Iberia, Edelweiss, Eurowings, and Transavia. Alongside the cancellations, several flights were delayed and some were diverted to other airports, including Porto Santo. Despite the disruption, weather openings during the day allowed some aircraft to land and depart safely on the Santa Cruz runway. IPMA data showed the strongest wind gust reached 91km/h.
