The Municipality of Santa Cruz today inaugurated the newly renovated Santo António da Serra Market after works costing in the region of one million euros. According to a press release, the upgrade has modernized the space while improving safety, functionality, and comfort for traders, producers, and visitors. The renovation also aimed to preserve the market’s authenticity and traditional charm, which have long made it a regional landmark. One of the most visible changes is the new tensioned roof, a modern architectural feature previously used by the Municipality at the Filipe Mota Sports Complex in Camacha. The market now offers 67 spaces, with 63 already in use for activities including horticulture, fruit production, honey, cider, poncha, liqueurs, flowers, plants, regional crafts, meat, restaurants, and beverages. Known as one of Madeira’s most popular Sunday destinations, the Santo Market continues to carry strong economic and tourism importance. During the ceremony, the Mayor of the Municipality, Élia Ascensão, said the project is “an investment in people, in the local economy and in the enhancement of the rural identity of the municipality,” and the municipality also announced plans to gradually extend activity to other days of the week, starting with Saturdays.
