A solemn ceremony was held yesterday morning at the Fortress of São João Baptista do Pico in Funchal to mark the 50th anniversary of the Autonomy of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and the 40th anniversary of Portugal’s accession to the European Union. The event formed part of the official visit to Madeira by the President of the Republic, António José Seguro. Known for his discreet and highly protocol-driven style, the Head of State has kept a low profile and stayed largely out of the media spotlight. That restrained approach was reflected in the tone of the ceremony, which was also notably understated. Despite the presence of several institutional figures, the open-air venue did not fill as expected. Dozens of seats remained empty, a detail that did not go unnoticed by those attending. The turnout has raised questions about the level of public engagement with the presidential visit.
