1. Where does PR1 start and finish?
The full PR1 starts at Pico do Areeiro and finishes at Achada do Teixeira, so the starting and finishing points are different. If you are hiking independently, you need to arrange transportation from the end of the trail.
If you are hiking only to Miradouro da Pedra Rija (Stairway to Heaven), you can return along the same trail to Pico do Areeiro.
2. Do I need to buy a ticket in advance?
Yes. To hike PR1, you need to make a reservation and pay for your ticket in advance. PR1 is one of the most popular hiking trails in Madeira, so it is best to book ahead.
Price: €4.50 to Stairway to Heaven (Pedra Rija) · €10.50 for the full PR1

3. What should I wear for PR1?
Choose comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear for a mountain trail.
For the Pico do Areeiro → Pedra Rija (Stairway to Heaven) section, comfortable sneakers with good grip are suitable.
For the full PR1 to Pico Ruivo, hiking or trekking shoes with good grip and ankle support are recommended.
Dress in layers, as mountain weather can change quickly.
4. How much water should I bring?
For the full PR1, bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person. The trail includes long climbs and many stairs.
Bring your water with you from the start. There are no places to buy water along the trail.
For the shorter Stairway to Heaven / Pedra Rija section, 1 litre is generally enough for most people.
5. Are there toilets along PR1?
There are no toilets along the trail.
If you are hiking the full PR1, there is a toilet at Pico Ruivo, where there is also a café. After Pico Ruivo, you continue downhill towards Achada do Teixeira, so it will take some time before you reach the next toilet.
Make sure you use the toilet before starting the hike. There are very few private places along the trail, as most of the route is exposed mountain terrain.
6. What is the weather like on PR1?
Mountain weather in Madeira can be very different from the coast and can change quickly, especially from mid-autumn to mid-spring.
Check the forecast specifically for Pico do Areeiro rather than relying only on the forecast for Funchal. If strong winds or heavy rain are forecast, it is better to postpone your hike.
For more accurate planning, check the forecast around three days before your hike.

8. How physically demanding is PR1?
It depends on which section you choose.
The Pico do Areeiro → Pedra Rija section is suitable for a wider range of hikers. There are many stairs, but the distance is relatively short, and you can walk at a comfortable pace with breaks.
The full PR1 to Pico Ruivo requires very good physical fitness and hiking experience. The trail includes long climbs and descents, many stairs, exposed sections and tunnels.
9. Can you hike PR1 without hiking experience?
The full PR1 can be difficult without previous hiking experience. It requires good physical fitness and the ability to handle long climbs, descents and many stairs.
The Pico do Areeiro → Miradouro da Pedra Rija (Stairway to Heaven) section can be done without previous hiking experience.
If you feel tired, slow down and take breaks. The time shown on your ticket is your entry time; it does not limit how long you can take to complete the hike.
There is no need to rush. Choose a comfortable pace and take breaks whenever you need them.
