In 2025, Madeira’s car market moved further toward electric and hybrid vehicles, with electrified models making up 44% of nearly 3,800 new registrations. A total of 3,796 light passenger cars were registered across the region. Gasoline vehicles remained the largest single category at 1,689 units, followed by 1,012 fully electric vehicles, 626 hybrid cars and 421 diesel vehicles. The data shows that electric cars already represent a substantial share of new sales, even though gasoline still leads individually. Hybrid vehicles reached 44.4% of the market share for new vehicles sold in Madeira over the last year, while gasoline stood at 40% and diesel fell to 11%. The trend is also continuing in 2026, as demand for electric vehicles remains strong despite higher purchase prices. Buyers and dealers point to environmental concerns, fuel savings and a payback period of about 3–4 years as key reasons for the shift. Across Portugal, 2025 also marked the first time electric cars sold more units than gasoline vehicles, although Madeira is following that change at a slower pace.
