The Regional Secretariat for Equipment and Infrastructures has rejected calls to suspend the new daily fee imposed on rent-a-car operators in Madeira. In a statement issued this afternoon, the Secretariat said the charge was already established by Regional Legislative Decree No. 7/2025/M of 4 December. It added that the decree also required the measure to be regulated later by ordinance, which is why the new rules were issued. The Regional Government said rental vehicle operators had known about the fee since December 2025 and had also been informed that implementation details would follow. It argued that the legal framework includes the main obligations for operators and transitional mechanisms intended to allow a gradual adjustment. The statement said Ordinance No. 214/2026, of 21 May, did not introduce any new fee, but only set out the procedures for applying and collecting the one already approved. The Secretariat also said it had sent a letter on the 2nd of June to ACIF-CCIM and ARAC – National Association of Vehicle Rental Companies after both requested clarification, and it reiterated its willingness to keep talking with sector representatives. The fee is €2 per rental day for standard vehicles and €1 per rental day for zero-emission vehicles, capped at 10 days per rental contract, with maximum charges of €20 and €10 respectively.
