European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, will visit Madeira on Tuesday, the 21st of July, to learn more about the challenges facing the Region’s fisheries sector. His schedule includes a stop at the fish market in Funchal at 08:15 am, where he will meet fisheries workers alongside Regional Secretary Nuno Maciel. The visit comes as Madeira continues to press European institutions to change the rules that block the renewal of the Region’s fishing fleet. Regional authorities want vessels that are more modern, safe and efficient so fishermen can work in better conditions. They say this can be achieved without undermining the sustainability of the activity. The meeting is expected to highlight the Region’s concerns and its push for a fleet update.
