Back Pain Tops Health Concerns in Madeira Survey

Low back pain and other chronic back problems are the most common health issues among people living in Madeira aged 15 and over, affecting 30.3% of respondents in the 2025 National Health Survey. The results were released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) on 24th June 2026. Hypertension was reported by 26.0% of those surveyed, while high cholesterol affected 22.9%, showing the continued impact of ageing and cardiovascular risk factors in the region. The survey also found that 60.9% of residents had visited a dentist in the 12 months before the interview, and 53.8% described their oral health as good or very good. At the same time, 12.1% rated their oral health as bad or very bad. In terms of weight, 39.7% of adults were classified as pre-obese and 20.9% as obese, meaning that more than half of the adult population is overweight. Lifestyle data showed that 68.5% of respondents eat vegetables or salads at least four times a week, 65.2% reported alcohol consumption in the previous 12 months, and 82.0% said they are non-smokers, although 13.7% smoke daily and 2.3% occasionally.
