Authorities Urge Caution After Fur Seal Sighting Near Praia Formosa

A juvenile fur seal was recently seen in the waters near Praia Formosa, in Funchal, prompting the Regional Government of Madeira to repeat its appeal for responsible behaviour around this protected animal. The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, through the Institute of Forests and the IFCN, said the seal should be left undisturbed and not exposed to stress or panic. The Madeira fur seal is classified as an endangered species, with an estimated population of around 30 individuals in the archipelago. Although sightings are becoming more frequent, the government says the species remains highly vulnerable despite the environmental policies adopted in recent decades. Madeira has also earned international recognition for its conservation work, including the creation of the Desertas Islands Nature Reserve and the monitoring carried out by the IFCN. With bathing season approaching, officials reminded residents and visitors to keep a safe distance on land, avoid touching or feeding the animals, reduce noise, and keep domestic animals away. At sea, people are being told not to interact with a fur seal while swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, or diving, and boaters should never chase or approach one deliberately. Any sighting must be reported through the lobomarinhomadeira.com portal or via the WhatsApp of the SOS Wildlife Network number +351 961 957 545.
