Strong Winds Disrupt Operations at Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport

Weather conditions are affecting operations this afternoon at Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, with several aircraft placed in holding patterns before trying to land. Flightradar24 images show planes waiting along the east coast of Madeira, particularly between Caniçal and Porto da Cruz, as crews hoped for better approach conditions. Among the aircraft affected were flights from Brussels Airlines, Transavia, easyJet, and a private jet that completed several circuits before making an attempt to land. The disruption has already caused diversions, including Wizz Air flight WZZ43Z from Warsaw, which was sent to Tenerife South airport in the Canary Islands after failing to land in Madeira. The problem is linked to wind and unstable approach conditions, which can be especially difficult for aircraft during the final stage of landing when gusts change in strength or direction. By the beginning of the evening, several planes were still making conditioned approaches to Madeira Airport, leaving open the possibility of more delays or diversions. However, the ANAM website at 20:33 indicated that the airport was operating normally.
