Small Earthquake Detected Northwest of Porto Santo This Morning

An earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale was recorded northwest of the island of Porto Santo. The Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) said the tremor happened at 05:24 this morning. It was located at a depth of 10 km, which, together with its distance and low intensity, means it was likely only detected by IPMA’s seismographs. Based on standard classification, a 2.9 magnitude event is considered very small. Earthquakes are grouped by magnitude from micro, under 2.0, through very small, small, light, moderate, strong, large, important, exceptional and extreme. No impact on the island was reported.
