Madeira’s Praia Formosa promenade will close from August for 16 months while a second-phase rehabilitation project worth €1.8 million gets underway. The public tender for the works is open now, and bids must be submitted by 24 May. This stage is the second of three planned phases and follows earlier repairs on the most damaged parts of the walkway. The new works will concentrate on sections that have suffered less severe, but still important, deterioration. Planned interventions include reinforcement of pillars, beams, slabs, and platforms, along with upgrades to pavements, retaining walls, access points, and signage. According to the Sociedade Metropolitana de Desenvolvimento, the aim is to strengthen structures weakened by years of exposure to coastal conditions. Construction is expected to start in August if the tender process stays on schedule, and closures will move along the route rather than affect the entire promenade at once. The promenade, inaugurated in 2006, is heavily used by residents and tourists, and while some accept the disruption, officials say the repairs are needed to improve safety and extend the life of the seafront path.
