PR 8 — Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço
Briefly
A spectacular coastal walk along the volcanic eastern peninsula of Madeira. Unlike the rest of the island, this area is semi-arid with no trees, offering raw views of dramatic cliffs, colorful rock layers, and the crashing Atlantic Ocean. It is a harsh, beautiful landscape that feels like another planet.

How to Get There
Drive past the town of Caniçal to the very end of the road. The trail starts at the large circular parking lot.

Important: There is zero shade on this trail. Sun protection is a matter of safety here.
What to Bring
- High SPF sunscreen and a hat
- At least 1.5L of water per person
- Windbreaker (it is almost always extremely windy)
- Sturdy hiking shoes (rocky and dusty terrain)
Key Points
- Wind: The gusts can be strong enough to throw you off balance. Be extremely careful near cliff edges.
- Casa do Sardinha: A small café/info center near the end of the trail where you can buy cold drinks and snacks.
- Swimming: You can swim at the small stone pier (Cais do Sardinha) near the café if the ocean is calm.
- The Final Peak: The climb to the very last viewpoint (Ponta do Furado) is steep and rocky but offers the best view of the lighthouse.
