The presence of a Portuguese Air Force helicopter off the coast of Garajau yesterday afternoon drew attention from many residents and visitors. Several people reported the sighting and shared images on social networks. DIÁRIO later learned from the commander of the Maritime Zone of Madeira, Bruno Teles, that the aircraft was taking part in a joint exercise. The manoeuvre involved the EH-101 Merlin helicopter and the patrol ship NRP Zaire. It was carried out by the Navy and the Portuguese Air Force. According to Bruno Teles, this kind of training is performed regularly to strengthen coordination between the two armed forces. The exercises are designed to improve their ability to respond in emergencies, especially during search-and-rescue operations.
